Linking to pages from within Word documents

When you click a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office document, you may experience the following behavior before you can open the page that you requested:

  • You are redirected to a logon page or an error page
  • You are prompted for authentication information
  • You arrive at the app, but not at the requested page
  • You arrive at the app, but you get an error because Word replaced # with %20-%20

Resolution

Make sure your running a UniversitySite build created since Sept 15, 2015.

Unlike IE9, when running IE10, or IE11 and Word 2007/2010/2013, Word replaces #'s in hyperlinks with %20-%20.  If you are having trouble with links that include a #, try this registry change  and then restart Word:

  • Click Start, Run and type regedit
  • Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 9.0 \ Common \ Internet

  • On the Edit menu, point to New, and click DWORD Value.
  • Enter ForceShellExecute as the value name.
  • On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  • In the Value data box, type 1.
  • Close Registry Editor

Note: As weird as this may be, all versions of Office released to date (including Office 2013) expect to find the ForceShellExecute property under the Office\9.0 key.

Be sure to consider all the implications of this registry change before pushing it out to all users. Read this:   http://blogs.technet.com/b/emeaoffice/archive/2013/06/13/impact-of-using-forceshellexecute-1-in-office-2007-2010-and-2013.aspx
