UniversitySite 2017 Resources

On-Demand resources are new UniversitySite 2017.  This article explains what they are and why we created them.

Resources are videos and documents intended as learning aids or teaching aids.

Examples:

  1. A video introducing new laptops that will be available soon
  2. A document detailing how to remotely access email, documents, and other internal systems from home
  3. A link to an educational blog or wiki
  4. A guide, outline, or slide deck intended for  instructors-only
UniversitySite historically provided limited support for resources. It was possible to attach resources to courses, but it was not possible to publish a resource unless it was part of a course and there was no system for sharing the same resource across multiple courses.  UniversitySite now provides the ability to create resources that may or may not be part of a course. It also keeps track of resource contents to ensure that duplicates of a single resource won't be created accidentally.

Creating Resources

Creating a resource involves uploading a file or providing a URL, assigning a name and optionally assigning, audiences, tags, and departments. Users are warned if they attempt to upload a file that already exists or create a link to a URL that already exists.

Multiple resources may be attached to a course and shared across multiple courses.

On-Demand Video Courses vs Resources

Courses with video content provide more functionality than resources with video content.  Courses use the SCORM industry standards for eLearning which provides  bookmarking and reporting of complete/incomplete, success/failure, and questions/answers. Courses can also be grouped into plans and can award credits to learners who complete them.
Resources are better suited for self-directed learning when compliance tracking is not important. Video Resources are flat, sit-back-and-watch videos whereas Video Courses can contain interactive eLearning assessments and simulations. Video Resources provide reporting limited to how many times each resource has been viewed and by whom.
