Courses - Create eLearning Course (On-Demand SCORM Course)

Overview

An eLearning package (SCORM or AICC) goes into its own On-Demand Course. You create the Course, upload the zip file to it, test it, and then make it visible to learners. The package itself decides when a learner has completed it, and UniversitySite records the status the package sends.

UniversitySite supports SCORM 1.2, all editions of SCORM 2004, and AICC, so you can use whichever version your authoring tool or vendor provides.

Tip: If the content is only a video and you don't need to track completion or let learners resume where they left off, a Resource with an .mp4 file may be simpler. See How to Add a Resource to a Course.

Before You Start

• You need permission to create Courses in InstructorSite.
• Use the .zip file exactly as the authoring tool or vendor published it. Do not unzip it and zip it again.
• The zip must have an imsmanifest.xml file at its top level, not inside a folder. This is what makes it a SCORM package.
• Copy the zip to your computer first. Uploading from a network drive or over a VPN is slower and fails more often.
• Decide on a Prefix and Number for the Course, for example ELRN 101.

Step 1: Create the Course

1. In InstructorSite, click New > New Course.
   Result: the New Course page opens on the Profile section.
2. In Title (1), type the name learners will see.
   Result: LearningSite shows this title, not the zip file name.
3. For Course Type (2), make sure On-Demand is selected.
4. In Prefix (3), select a prefix or type a new one.
5. In Number (4), type a number of 1 or higher.
6. In Duration (5), type how long the course takes, in hours, minutes and seconds.
7. In Content Provider (6), keep the default or select the vendor that made the content.

Step 2: Add the eLearning Package

1. Click On-Demand Content in the menu on the left.
2. For Content Type, select eLearning Upload (SCORM or AICC package) (1).
3. Under SCORM/AICC Package, click Click here to upload a zip file (2).
4. Select your zip file and click Open.
   Result: the file name shows above the button. The file uploads when you save the Course.

Step 3: Hide the Course While You Test It

1. Click Security in the menu on the left.
2. Turn off Visible in LearningSite.
   Result: learners cannot see the Course while you test it.

Credits, Certificates, Audiences and the other sections are optional. You can add them now or after testing.

Step 4: Save the Course

1. Click Save Course.
   Result: a progress bar shows while the zip uploads. Keep the page open until it finishes.
2. Wait for the Course page to open.
   Result: the On-Demand Content section shows Version 1 with your package.

If Save Course is not available, the list above it names what is missing, for example Title is empty or File not selected for upload.

Step 5: Test the Course

Test every new package before learners use it. Your test attempts are recorded under your own name.

1. On the Course page, click Test e-Learning (1).
   Result: a Troubleshooting Tips message opens.
2. Click Continue.
   Result: the package plays in your browser.
3. Go through a few pages, then exit the package.
   Result: you return to the Course page.
4. Click the Users tab (2) and find your name.
   Result: your status should be Incomplete, not Complete.
5. Click Test e-Learning again.
   Result: the package should resume where you stopped.
6. Finish the package as a learner would, including any quiz.
7. Click the Users tab again.
   Result: your status should now be Complete.

Step 6: Make the Course Visible to Learners

1. On the Course page, click Edit.
2. Click Security in the menu on the left.
3. Turn on Visible in LearningSite.
4. Click Save Course.
   Result: learners in the Course's Audiences can find and play it in LearningSite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SCORM version should we ask for?

Any version works. For long courses, SCORM 2004 is a better choice when it is available. SCORM 1.2 can store only a small amount of resume data, so a long course may not resume where the learner left off.

Does the zip file name matter?

No. Learners see the Course Title. Use any file name that helps you keep track of versions.

The vendor offers a "full" package and a small "distributed" or "remote" package. Which one do we use?

Both upload the same way. A full package contains all of the content, and UniversitySite hosts it. A distributed package is a small zip that plays the content from the vendor's own servers, so the vendor can update it without a new upload. If you use a distributed package, your firm's network must allow the vendor's site. Test the same type of package that you plan to use for real courses.

The upload is slow or fails. What can we do?

Copy the zip to your computer, and try again from the office network or without the VPN if your firm allows it. More tips are in 5 Things to Do When Uploading Gets You Down.

The test did not show the right status, or a video in the package does not play. Who can fix it?

The package decides when it is complete, how it resumes, and how its videos and player controls work. These are set in the authoring tool when the package is published. Contact the person or vendor who made the content. They can test the package in SCORM Cloud to confirm how it behaves outside UniversitySite.

We received an updated version of the package. How do we replace it?

Edit the Course and upload the new zip as a new version, so learners who already started can finish. Read Add New Version vs Delete Existing Version of eLearning Package before you replace it.
