Events - Schedule Multi-Day Event

Task

When you have an event to schedule that should be scheduled as back to back consecutive days, and which starts at the same time each day you may want to use multi-day to make this happen.

Note: Multi-day courses must be enabled in Global Settings if you want to use them. Multiple Days is found within the Course Settings tool.

Multi-day courses can be registered for as a single event, but the meeting request which shows up on your calendar for one of these events appears to be a single, very long event that starts on the first day at the time you specified for the start time of the event, and extends across the other two days for what appears to be 72 hours (using a 3 day multi-day course as my example).

Because it shows up as a single block on the calendar there is no reminder for learners after the first day AND it requires the assumption that the course will be scheduled consecutive or back to back days and start the same time each day.

If your course will not run consecutive days or needs to start at a different time on at least one of the days you probably should NOT use multi-day.

To Multi-Day or Not to Multi-Day?

Yes if

  • the course can be scheduled for consecutive days
  • you don't need a reminder on each day
  • the course will start at the same time each day

No if

  • the course will not always be scheduled for consecutive days
  • you do want reminders for each day for learners
  • the course does not have the same start time each day

When you have an event that will be scheduled for more than one day to complete and you've decided NOT to use multi-day, you have at least two other options to consider

Option 1 - Create a course that represents each day so you end up with something like Course X: Day 1 of 3, Course X: Day 2 of 3, and Course X: Day 3 of 3 and schedule them each as needed.

Option 2 - Enable and specify multiple sessions for the course and schedule each session as needed, making sure to schedule each of the sessions for the course SO THAT people who attend all 3 sessions get credit for completing that course.

Tip: If you want to use sessions, you must first enable Multiple Sessions in the Course Settings tool from within Global Settings.

WARNING: Do NOT use both multi-day AND multi-session, this almost always causes problems resulting in people not getting credit for their event.

Tip: You cannot schedule a multi-day event UNLESS the course has been FIRST defined as multi-day.

Steps

  1. Edit the course if it already exists, or create a new one
  2. Select Advanced from the quick menu on the left
  3. From the Days field specify the desired number of days
  4. Save Course
  5. Now schedule this course as desired
