Best Practices for Inserting Videos into eLearning Authoring Tools
From time to time, we receive inquiries about the best practices for inserting videos into eLearning authoring tools such as Captivate. This article focuses on general guidelines for the video itself, rather than the specifics of exporting a SCORM package from an authoring tool.
Recommendations
- Use MP4 Files:
Why MP4? Browsers can start playing an MP4 file while it is still being downloaded, provided the MP4 is published for progressive download. This feature is not available with formats like WMV or FLV.
Optimize Bit Rate:
- Ensure the total bit rate of the MP4 you are inserting into our system is less than 6 Mbps (6000 kbps).
- Experiment with lowering the bit rate as much as possible. Each video is different and will have varying bit rate requirements to maintain adequate video quality.
Gradually reduce the bit rate until the video quality becomes unacceptable, then use the lowest acceptable bit rate. This approach helps ensure the best playback experience, minimizes delays and stuttering, and prevents network congestion due to video traffic.
Check Video Resolution:
- Use the following table to determine the maximum recommended bit rate based on your video’s resolution, and then adjust the bit rate as low as possible:
Resolution | Maximum Bit Rate (Mbps) |
---|---|
480p | 2.5 |
720p | 5.0 |
1080p | 8.0 |
4K | 20.0 |
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your videos are optimized for the best performance and user experience in your eLearning courses.

Right-click on your MP4 in Windows Explorer and mode note of the total bit rate. 17,190 kbps in this case is WAY to high:
